SILVA JR, MARIO DA. THE CLASSICAL GUITAR IN PARANÁ: A HISTORICAL STYLISTIC APPROACH

This study examines the repertoire for solo guitar, chamber music with guitar and guitar concertos by composers from the State of Paraná written from 1941up to date. The list of investigated composers include the ones born in Paraná but now living in other states, and also the ones who have settled down there, although born in other states. They altogether are fourteen: Admar Garcia (1916-1994), Waltel Branco (1929-), Arrigo Barnabé (1951-), Jaime Mirtenbaum Zenamon (1953-), Carmo Bartoloni (1956- ), Chico Mello (1957-), João José Félix Pereira (1957-), Harry Crowl (1958-), Norton Dudeque (1958-), Maurício Dottori (1960-), Rogério Budasz (1964-), Guilherme Campos (1966-), Octávio Camargo (1967-) and Fernando Riederer (1977-). These composers are classified into three groups: (1) composers born between 1916 and 1953; (2) guitarist composers born after 1953; and (3) non-guitarrist composers born after 1953. This study presents three interrelated aspects for the understanding of this repertoire: (1) the classical guitar literature achievements in the twentieth century; (2) the development of the classical guitar in Brazil starting from Heitor Villa-Lobos; and (3) the scene of classical Southern and Southeastern Brazil. The repertoire collected is presented as a catalogue, including information such as instrumentation, movements, dedications, timing, premier, and available recordings.

Doctorate/DMA

The thesis investigates the works of composers Edino Krieger (1928) (Ritmata 1974 for solo guitar), Chico Mello (1958) (Do Lado do Dedo, 1987 for solo guitar and Dança for Guitar Quartet, 1986) and Arthur Kampela (1960) (Percussion Study 1.1991-93, for solo guitar) aiming to create a guide to interpreting and writing extended technique in Brazil. The works permeate the productive time by the composers that extends from 1974 to 1994. It investigated concepts and trends in technical overview of the expanded national and international historical way. Such investigation was aimed at addressing the complex features in terms of timbre and rhythmic- percussive procedures. Articulatory variables procedures (diversified plucking, tapping and percussive procedures) implementing by the guitarists imply improvement and enrichment of the quality of the aesthetic repertoire. These procedures consist of creative processes viability acoustic and mechanical fit, instrumental support and materials for clarity and feasibility in the works. Every extended sound found in these works was listed and categorized.
